Core aeration is the process of reducing the negative impacts of soil compaction by removing plugs of soil from the upper 3" of the soil profile and depositing those cores on the field surface. Due to this, core aeration is typically performed in conjunction with other services such as topdressing or overseeding. Core aeration is widely regarded as one of the essential services of any ongoing field care program.
Slicing is an alternative means of aeration with numerous advantages. Slicing reduces soil compaction and allows for better water transfer through the soil profile with a minimum of surface disturbance, this allows for the field to be used immediately after the service has been performed. Slicing also reduces clumpiness in fields with a large proportion of ryegrass by cutting the bunch grass.
